Shallow exposed and inundated sediments are subject to freeze–thaw cycles in winter months. There is evidence that winter conditions are changing along with the frequency, depth, temperature and duration of freezing. Work to date in soils demonstrates the freeze-thaw sensitivity of a number of biogeochemical processes, but parallel work has not been done in wetlands, rivers, or lakes.
